Why is pressure required in an autoclave?

Since steam can have temperatures above 373K, and the moist heat is the cause of the cell destruction and endospore inactivation, why do we need this 15psi of pressure? I am aware that the increase in pressure increases water's boiling point to allow for temperatures of 121C without vaporization but the liquid water doesn't sterilize. Does the pressure allow for the steam to increase past 373K?

Pressure is required to increase the boiling point of water. The boiling point water at normal atmospheric pressure is 100 C or 373 K. At 15 psi, you double the atmospheric pressure and increase the temperature of the steam to 121 C. It is the temperature that kills. The temperature of water and steam is the same, 121 C.
